If you’ve got yogurt and self-rising flour, you can whip up the best buns or rolls ever! The catch? I never buy self-rising flour. And if you’re working with limited resources—whether due to store stock or budget—it’s just one more thing you might not have on hand.
Make It Yourself!
I don’t let that stop me—I make it myself! Did you know that self-rising flour is simply flour, salt, and baking powder mixed together?
And speaking of baking powder… did you know that many store-bought brands contain aluminum? That’s definitely not something I want in my food! Plus, why spend extra money on something you can make way cheaper at home? The best part? When you make it yourself, you know there are no fillers or questionable ingredients!
Here’s how to make your own baking powder:
Homemade Baking Powder Recipe
2 parts cream of tartar
1 part baking soda
Mix well and store in an airtight container.
That’s it! Now you’re more self-sufficient, and the power is back in your hands.
Getting Ready for Winter Baking
Today is a good kitchen day—but instead of making soap, I’m starting my winter bread baking! And that means whipping up my favorite English muffin buns!
I love taking advantage of my wood stove—using it to cook my buns and letting my sandwich bread rise nearby. To prep for the season, I made an extra batch of self-rising flour and another batch of homemade yogurt to have on hand.
Oh, and check out my new dough whisk! If you work with dough, I HIGHLY recommend one. No more sticky spoons clogged with dough—it makes mixing a breeze!
How to Make Yogurt
It’s so simple! Just mix a small amount of yogurt into milk, stir, and let it sit in a warm place (like near the wood stove). The yogurt acts as a starter culture, turning the milk into a fresh batch of yogurt. Easy, right?
English Muffin Buns – My Favorite 2-Ingredient Recipe!
Last week, I showed you how to make yogurt, and besides eating it, it’s the key to this amazing recipe! I’m all about easy, wholesome, from-scratch recipes that replace store-bought products—especially when they use simple, multi-purpose ingredients.
And this one? It only takes TWO ingredients! Can you believe that? These have quickly become a staple in my kitchen—perfect toasted, as a sandwich, or even as a hamburger bun. A must-try!
Homemade Self-Rising Flour Recipe
When I first saw this recipe, I thought… "Shoot, I can’t make that—I NEVER have self-rising flour!" But then I figured out how easy it is to make:
✅ 1 cup flour✅ 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder✅ ¼ teaspoon salt✅ Mix well and sift!
Problem solved! Now, onto the good stuff…
English Muffin Buns Recipe
🧈 Ingredients:
1 to 1 ¼ cup yogurt
2 cups homemade self-rising flour
👩🍳 Directions:
Mix together until a dough forms.
Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead just until it’s no longer sticky.
Cut into 6 pieces and shape into flat buns (they will rise while cooking, so don’t make them the final size you want!).
Lightly coat a cast iron pan with oil and cook over low to medium heat, flipping once golden brown (about 10 minutes per side).
For a fully cooked center, let them cook a bit longer on each side after browning.
I always double the batch, pre-cut them in half, and freeze them. I take out a few at a time to keep them fresh and use them as English muffins, hamburger buns, or dinner rolls.
With just a gallon of milk, you can make yogurt and self-rising flour, giving you the perfect from-scratch bread substitute!
Give It a Try!
I’d love to hear if you try this recipe! And for my fellow bread-makers, get yourself a dough whisk—I just got one, and I LOVE it! No more dough-covered spoons that you can’t stir with—this thing is a game-changer.
Enjoy! 😊
